Sheila Hicks’ new, in-situ installation Gateway to Adventure is now on view as part of To Have and To Hold, the 2024 Horst Arts and Music Expo in Asiat Park.
Juxtaposed against the site's industrial backdrop, Hicks orchestrates a vibrant dialogue between softness and strength. With Gateway to Adventure, one is invited on a journey, with an invitation that takes the form of vibrant fabrics hanging above the path leading to the center of the park. This temporary vivid shelter bursts into bloom unexpectedly through intermittently programmed lights, adding an enchanting dimension as park and festival visitors come and go.
Guided by space and light in her process, Hicks brings a sense of playfulness with her installation. She was inspired by the many elements on site in Asiat Park that seem to dance between infrastructure and nature. By enriching the park’s entrance with colorful dynamic ribbons, Hicks’ installation celebrates the city’s diversity and the site's resurrection as a hub of creativity and community.
Gateway to Adventure is on view in Asiat Park from May 23 through September 8, 2024. To learn more about the 2024 Horst Arts and Music Festival and Expo, click here.
